SIKH SCHOOLGIRL’S COURT WIN IS A VICTORY OF COMMON SENSE - HALL

29th July 2008

Fiona Hall MEP for the North East has been delighted to hear the news that Sarika Singh, the 14 year old school girls excluded from school for refusing to take off her Kara – a religious steel bracelet sacred to Sikhs - has won her case at the High Court today.

The school girl, who has not attended school since November 2007, talked of her happiness at knowing that Sikh school children throughout England could no longer suffer the same discrimination that she has faced in the last year.

Fiona, who backed Sarika throughout her ordeal said, “I am very pleased with the courts decision as a victory of common sense and religious tolerance. Sarika was not wearing the bracelet as a fashion statement but as a statement of her religious commitment.

“I hope that Sarika gets the proper support she needs to settle back into school life without any trouble.”
