FIONA SIGNS UP TO BIKES ON BUSES

Fiona Hall has signed a local petition calling on bus operator, Arriva, to allow all bikes to be taken on buses when there is room.

Responding to complaints from a local Durham resident, Fiona Hall wrote to the operator, Arriva, requesting that they re-think their policy and allow bikes on their buses.

Currently, Arriva only allows fold-up bikes on their buses. When the local resident tried to carry their bike on an Arriva bus during their commute home from work, the driver refused to let them on despite the bus being almost empty.

Commenting on the petition, Fiona Hall said:

“I pointed out to Arriva that people are being encouraged to use public transport more and more in order to address climate change and that rigid policies such as this do nothing to help.

“I understand that if a bus is busy there may not be room for bicycles that do not fold down. But when it is quiet and there is clearly the room required to safely stow a bike it seems ludicrous not to allow bike-riders on board. It would make much more sense to leave the matter to the discretion of the drivers rather than enforce a rigid policy at all times."I am disappointed at Arriva's response that all non-folding bikes will continue to be banned on its buses at all times.

“I have therefore signed a petition started by the resident calling on Arriva to change their policy."
