On 15th October, Sir Menzies Campbell, Leader of the Liberal Democrats stepped down as party leader with immediate effect. Commenting on the departure, Liberal Democrat Member of the European Parliament, Fiona Hall said:
“Ming Campbell led the Liberal Democrats with great dignity and purpose. We are now a stronger and more capable outfit than we were 19 months ago. It is sad to see him make this decision, which has clearly been made after much thought and personal consideration.
“Ming’s grasp of foreign affairs and defence matters has been outstanding. He has a depth of understanding of the issues unmatched by anybody else in Parliament.
“The Party owes Ming a debt of gratitude and I personally thank him and wish him all the best for his future.”
