FIND OUT MORE ABOUT FAIR TRADE

6 March 2007

MEP Fiona Hall will be hosting an information stall at the city’s Fair Trade market this Friday.

The development spokesperson will offer information and advice on Fair Trade and will be available to answer questions.

The Liberal Democrat will be joined by a co-operative worker from Nicaragua in the afternoon.

Fiona, who is a member of the Durham City Fair Trade partnership group said:

"I hope that people will visit the stall to find out about how buying Fair Trade can change someone’s life.

"The Fairtrade Mark guarantees a fair and stable price to farmers in developing countries. It also guarantees consumers a top-quality and environmentally-friendly product.

"It is such a simple and direct way to make a big difference to the lives of poor families in developing countries. Helping people to support themselves through trade is a hand-up, not a hand-out.”

Councillor Carol Woods, the Environment portfolio holder on Durham City Council who is also a member of the Durham City Fair Trade partnership plans to shop at the market on Friday, she said:

“Consumers in Durham will be able to buy and try the top-quality, environmentally-friendly products that are on offer in the city, and support poor farmers and their families in developing countries.”
