MEP ASKS FOR ANSWERS FROM GOVERNMENT OVER MORPETH HMRC OFFICE CLOSURES

12.00.00am BST (GMT +0100) Mon 25th Jun 2007

Fiona Hall has written to Rt Hon. Dawn Primarolo at the HM Treasury following rumours that the HM Revenue and Customs office in Morpeth is to close.

The Liberal Democrat has received a number of letters and calls from worried workers at the Morpeth HMRC office. They are concerned that the closure would leave just four offices in the North East, two in Newcastle, one in Sunderland and one in Washington.

Fiona Hall said:

"Many workers who contacted me live in rural Northumberland and would find it very difficult to commute to other HMRC offices in the region.

"I have asked the Government if they will be taking this into consideration when coming to a decision over the future organisation of HMRC.
